Current Program

Seattle Music Partners works in partnership with four schools in Seattle’s Central District: Bailey Gatzert, Leschi and Thurgood Marshall Elementary Schools and Washington Middle School.

We provide a safe, after-school environment for students to learn to read and play music while enjoying the benefits of a mentoring relationship. Concepts such as responsibility, goal-setting and perseverance are reinforced in the context of one-on-one music lessons, ensemble work and performances.

This past school year we provided more than 80 students with weekly lessons on flute, clarinet, saxophone, Flutisttrumpet, trombone, French horn, violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, guitar and percussion.

Our students come from a variety of ethnic groups and from varied family and economic circumstances (including homeless families, single parent homes and guardianships). Our student demographics for the 2008/2009 school year were as follows: 81% African American, 9% Hispanic / Latino, 6% Asian American / Pacific Islander, 3% Caucasian and 1% Native American.

In the last two years, we significantly expanded the reach of our program, growing from one to four after-school sites, increasing the capacity for participant enrollment and focusing on the quality of the curriculum and individual and ensemble experiences available for the students.
