Current Program
Seattle Music Partners works in partnership with four schools in Seattle’s Central District: Bailey Gatzert, Leschi and Thurgood Marshall Elementary Schools and Washington Middle School.
We provide a safe, after-school environment for students to learn to read and play
music while enjoying the benefits of a mentoring relationship. Concepts such as responsibility, goal-setting and perseverance are reinforced in the context of one-on-one music lessons, ensemble work and performances.
This past school year we provided close to 100 students with weekly lessons on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, guitar and percussion.
Beginning with the 2011/2012 school year, we will expand our program to two afternoons a week at select sites to increase instructional and instrument ‘touch’ time for our students.
Our students come from a variety of ethnic groups and from varied family and economic circumstances (including homeless families, single parent homes and guardianships). Our student demographics for the 2010/2011 school year were as follows: 63% African American, 14% Asian American/Pacific Islander, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 11% Caucasian and 1% Native American.
