Why Music?
We are working to bridge the opportunity gap created as a result of reduced funding for instrumental music in Seattle’s public elementary schools, particularly in those schools at which parents cannot raise funds to reinstate instructors or provide additional music programs. While schools focus on federal and state achievement standards, often to the detriment of arts education, a growing body of research suggests that students who learn to play instruments and read music do better academically.
We believe that providing a child with the opportunity to build a foundation of musical skills, coupled with the strength of a mentoring relationship, helps foster self-confidence and an overall engagement in learning.
